From an early age Miranda Brock has always loved fantasy and adventure everything. Since she doesn't live in a world of enchanting powers, mythical beasts, and things unbelievable she has decided to write about them. (Although, if you happen to see a dragon flying around, do tell her.) Born in southern Illinois, where she still resides with her husband and two children, she grew up running through the woods, playing in creeks, and riding horses. What started out as writing poetry grew into short stories and eventually led to her first novel, Souls Discovered. The Imperfect Heroine
I love a good, strong heroine as much as the next person, the kind who stand up, don’t hold back and can kick some major butt. I believe that a strong heroine can provide great examples for girls and young women to look up to. Reading a book with a strong heroine is always inspiring but a problem arises when she is too perfect. A constantly brave, put-together, on-top-of-her-game heroine, to me, is unrealistic. Everybody has flaws and moments of misgivings. Your heroine is no exception.
I’m not saying not to have a strong heroine in your writing. Please, do! The damsel in distress has been so overdone and can be boring, besides. You should leave room for growth in your heroine. Give her challenges and obstacles. Doing so will make your heroine stronger and get her to the woman warrior you want her to be. Keep in mind that your amazing heroine still needs some imperfections. Is she a hard-core vampire slayer but has a fear of heights? Can she outrun every guy on the track team but has a bad habit of biting her nails? Even little flaws will make your heroine more realistic and relatable.
Don’t be afraid to start with a weak character. As I’ve mentioned, leave room for growth. In my novel, Souls Discovered, my heroine, Autumn, is just a normal seventeen-year-old. She’s never been in a fight, doesn’t have powers, and has definitely never faced a Dehmon intent on taking her life. However, she grows. Autumn has a stubborn streak, even in the beginning of the book. I used this to help her develop her strength. She learns to fight. She masters powers. She becomes a Dehmon-slaying warrior. Sure, she still has flaws but that makes her real.
An authentic character is important. Young women need to be able to relate. A courageous heroine is a great role model but the journey to that strength is just as inspiring.
